چکیده

The goal of this paper is to introduce an adjoint approach for calculating stream depletion in a river that is hydraulically connected to an aquifer. This paper presents the coupled forward and adjoint equations of flow in an unconfined aquifer, a confined aquifer, and in a river. Flow in the river is assumed to follow Manning’s equation, and the river is assumed to have a wide, rectangular cross section. With these assumptions, the governing equation of flow in the river is non-linear; thus its adjoint is linear in the adjoint state, but still depends on the state variable of the forward equation, i.e., on the river head. This paper outlines an approach for solving the adjoint equations, which requires some approximations and some modification of a code that solves the forward equations.

Relationship between River Flow, Rainfall and Groundwater pumpage in Mikkes Basin (Morocco)

This paper investigates the relationship between river flow, rainfall and groundwater pumpage in the Mikkes stream during the period 1968-2009. The Mikkes basin is located in the north center of Morocco and consists of three different zones that represent diversified geologies. This basin includes a phreatic and confined aquifer in Saïs basin and a shallow aquifer in the Tabular Middle Atlas. A...

Incorporation of groundwater pumping in a global Land Surface Model with the representation of human impacts

Observations indicate that groundwater levels are declining in many regions around the world. Simulating such depletion of groundwater at the global scale still remains a challenge because most global Land Surface Models (LSMs) lack the physical representation of groundwater dynamics in general and well pumping in particular. Here we present an integrated hydrologic model, which explicitly simu...

افت شدید سطح آب زیرزمینی و اندرکنش رودخانه- آبخوان (مطالعه موردی: آبخوان نجف‌آباد در حوضه زاینده‌رود)

Depletion and consequently reduction in groundwater storage results in numerous harmful environmental effects such as reduction in yields of wells, land subsidence, lowering of water quality and also reduction in storage of surface water bodies having hydraulic relation with aquifers. In this research, groundwater depletion in the Najafabad subcatchment aquifer located in the GavKhouni basin, I...

Melting Heat Transfer and Radiation Effects on Jeffrey Fluid Flow over a Continuously Moving Surface with a Parallel Free Stream

This article is proposed to address the melting heat transfer of a Jeffrey fluid in Blasius and Sakiadis flow caused due to a moving surface. Thermal radiation and a constant free stream are considered in this mathematical model. The non-linear coupled dimensionless equations from the governing equations are attained by employing appropriate similarity transformations. The resulting dimensionle...

Coupled modeling approach to assess climate change impacts on groundwater recharge and adaptation in arid areas

The effect of future climate scenarios on surface and groundwater resources was simulated using a modeling approach for an artificial recharge area in arid southern Iran. Future climate data for the periods of 2010–2030 and 2030–2050 were acquired from the Canadian Global Coupled Model (CGCM 3.1) for scenarios A1B, A2, and B1. These scenarios were adapted to the studied region using the delta-c...
